Our Glossary

One Health

One Health is defined as “an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals, and ecosystems,” recognizing the fundamental interdependence between these areas.

This approach expands the initial framework of “One Medicine,” which advocated for a shared knowledge base between human and veterinary medicine, by explicitly incorporating the environmental dimension.

It operationalizes cross-sectoral cooperation to generate tangible “added value,” for example in controlling zoonotic diseases. Grounded in systems thinking and transdisciplinarity, it mobilizes academic and non-academic actors, including local and indigenous knowledge, to address complex global challenges such as pandemics or biodiversity loss.
