Available statistics show that men continue to outnumber women in most fields of science. In 2015, for example, women researchers accounted for only 28% of global researchers with regional disparities. Efforts are needed to bridge the gender gap in science to ensure that women also benefit as citizens and can contribute to society. During this 2nd edition of the GoFoWiseR initiative, African women in science were gathered to exchange experiences. The annual forum of women scientists was held from 18 to 19 July 2019 in Dakar, Senegal around the theme “Accelerate connections, strengthen networks to improve women’s experiences in science”.
This meeting was an opportunity to review the policies put in place to promote women researchers in science. It was also a platform to redefine the place of the scientific woman and encourage young girls to the professions of science.
Africa One – ASPIRE was represented by a delegation of 10 people including 8 fellows (Master, PhD and Postdoc level), a training coordinator and a communications officer.
GoFoWiseR is an initiative of AWARD (African Women in Agricultural Research and Development).
Its goal is to expand the pool of women in science by providing tailored funding, pre-tests, facilities, and mentorship to women.
