Summary of the module

In order to be able to work in a transdisciplinary framework, it is necessary to understand social science and humanities can bring, especially in the context of science wars, where many beliefs surround social sciences and humanities methodologies and what they can bring. In this module, we will provide tools from social sciences and humanities and show the added value of bringing them properly into transdisciplinary approaches by numerous practical examples.

Socio-anthropology conceptual and methodological approaches
Qualitative data collection and analysis
What philosophy and linguistics can bring in One Health: rethinking concepts delimitations, values in science, decolonisation of knowledge, standpoint theory
Economics: evaluation of efficiency and evaluations of costs for cost-efficiency, cost-benefit and cost-usefulness analyses
Political sciences and governance: accountability to affected populations, going beyond cosmetic engagement.

Specific objectives:

At the end of the module, participants are able to:
Formulate a proper research problem using socio-anthropology conceptual and theoretical approaches;
Collect and analyse qualitative data;
Contribute to intervention research by proposing effective and sustainable solutions without losing scientific objectivity;
Have reflexivity on the concepts they use and how values impact their research;
Carry participative cost – efficiency analyses;
Think the engagement of communities with the adequate tools and sustainably.

Evaluation

Participants are provided with a research protocol and have to make feedback on how to better integrate social sciences and humanities in the protocol.
